Guest policy changes to take effect Fall 2011

Dear Resident Student,

Recently informational sessions were held in each of the residence halls regarding the proposed guest visitation policy for the upcoming academic year.  Over the past year the professional staff of the Office of Residential Life and Student Conduct has discussed many different ideas regarding the policy with members of various administrative offices including the Dean of Students and Campus Security, as well as, student staff members of the department.  The recent hall meetings were conducted to gain feedback from additional students living within the residence halls.

For clarification purposes please be aware of the following aspects of the proposed policy:

1)     If your guest is a current on campus resident there is no change to the current visitation policy.  Your guest still must sign into your residence hall under the same process as they do now and all of the same rules apply.

2)    If your guest does not live on campus or attend the university then s/he may sign in as a guest, under the same process as now, as long as s/he is leaving the building beforemidnight.  The only change is that guests, who do not live on campus or attend the university, that wish to stay past midnight must be signed in as an overnight guest through an overnight guest pass request form submitted to your Resident Director 24 hours in advance.You will need to submit the form in advance and pick up the guest pass from the RA on Duty between 7pm and Midnight of the day your guest is visiting.

Historically, there have been times when late night guests, who do not live in the residence halls or attend the university, have come to campus and been involved in situations – some of which have resulted in damage to property or physical altercations.  The residence halls are dynamic and diverse with students from throughout the country and all over the world.  It is only through the awareness of how our actions affect the greater community in which we live that we are able to maintain a respectful and safe living environment.  The proposed changes to the guest visitation policy help us provide such an environment for all of the students living on campus.
