Fall Activities Fair

By Kevin Matos
On October 3, 2013
The Fall Activities Fair, already known as somewhat of a staple, takes place near the start of every school year, allowing all students, from freshmen, to transfers, to returning, to get a taste of the various groups who have become a part of the UB community. As always, it features representatives from each club, talking face-to-face with students and other prospective members. In addition, it features performances from some of the groups on campus, such as F.L.O.H. and STOMP.

This semester was no different, with the first half-hour of the activity dedicated mostly for informational sessions and the exchange of contact information between students and club representatives, and the hour that followed taken up by some amazing performances. What impressed me the most, however, was being able to see some new organizations join us this year, like the Baking Club, which I'm sure will have a great future here at UB.

Of course, some clubs and organizations have been here for quite some time, and to pay tribute to them, we were able to showcase a few in this issue.

Model United Nations Club

"The Model UN Club meets every Tuesday at 8:30 pm, inside Carlson Hall, Room 252. As a group that represents the diversity found both in the university and in the world itself, we focus on encouraging teamwork between our members.

"We educate and encourage our members to do their research, whether they're preparing to represent a country or preparing to debate an important topic that affects us internationally, or even globally.

"We strive to promote that idea of a team effort, either by having our more experienced members act as mentors for the newer members, or by simply being there to support fellow members in what they do, whether it's academic or personal."

The RHOyally Refined Rho Alpha Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.

"We are a historically black, Greek sorority which caters to the empowerment of young women and betterment of our communities."

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority's aim is to enhance the quality of life within the community. Public service, leadership development and education of youth are the hallmarks of the organization's programs and activities. Sigma Gamma Rho addresses concerns that impact society educationally, civically, and economically.

Though we have private chapter meetings, on campus we host a variety of programs and community service projects, as can be found on our events calendar.

UB Gospel Choir

"The University of Bridgeport Gospel Choir meets every Monday at 7:30 pm, taking place inside Room 110 of the ABC Building's Choir Room.

"For the most part, we do group prayers for anyone in need. However, we also learn and rehearse new gospel songs. Soon, we'll be adding praise dancers to our Gospel Choir addition. So don't worry if you feel like you can't sing, because you can feel free to join our club in dance.

"We also have a church service every Thursday night from 8-9 pm. The church services take place inside Littlefield Theater, also found within the ABC Building."

UB Dramatics Club

"The University of Bridgeport Dramatics Club meets every Tuesday at 8:30 pm. The meeting takes place in the ABC Building, in the Littlefield Recital Hall.

"We do our best to spread knowledge of Theater Arts through the UB Campus' community, and the Bridgeport community as well. We create a safe and nurturing environment that allows everyone to express themselves creatively.

"Look out for our end of the semester performance, One Night Only."

Saudi Students Club

"We are the Saudi Students Club. We meet once a month on campus, often in the Discovery Room inside Wahlstrom Library.

"At the meetings, we discuss all the events that we have planned for the semester, and maybe even the school year. In addition, we also take the time to discuss ways in which we can help our fellow students and club members in their academic life. We work hard to make the students feel comfortable by providing advice, planning trips, BBQ, and sports activities.

"For more information, or just to see how we are as a group, you can go to our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/sscub."

UB Baker's Club

"We, at the University of Bridgeport Baker's Club, meet every Friday from 1-3 pm in the basement floor of Bodine Hall.

"We strive to teach one another new baking recipes and techniques. On top of that, we also wish to provide baked goods to our student body through fundraisers or even by catering for fellow clubs.

"We hope to not only enhance our own baking skills, but to also encourage other students to also join us in making new friends and having fun.

buildOn University of Bridgeport Chapter

"The UB Chapter of buildON holds meetings every Wednesday at 8:30 pm, which are held in the Student Center in Room 213/215. However, we also hold meetings in the Private Dining Room on the following dates: September 25th

"buildOn's mission is to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations through service and education. We often do community service, as well fundraising to help raise money to help charities build schools in Third World countries."

W.E.A.C.T

"The name of our organization is W.E.A.C.T, which stands for Working and Educating to Achieve Community Togetherness.

"W.E.A.C.T is an organization dedicated to expressing our ideas for school spirit, and educating current and prospective students through new experiences. In addition, we also give service to our local area of Bridgeport and the state of Connecticut.

"Our organization allows students to educate themselves through their own ideas, as well as by learning from others. The club unites students socially, culturally, spiritually, recreationally, and most importantly, educationally.

"The club meets every Wednesday evening at 9 p.m. in Room 207/ 209 of the Student Center. All are welcome to come join the club and share any great ideas that may want to see fulfilled here at the University of Bridgeport."
