Dads (TV Show Review)

Fall has arrived, a new school year has begun, and with it all comes a new set of TV series competing to be our go-to source for entertainment when we need a break from school. Among these contenders is yet another sitcom. Don't we already have a few of those? Well, we get the sense that this one might be much different than the sitcoms we're used to, especially since the Executive Producer is Seth MacFarlane, creator of popular animated shows such as: Family Guy, The Cleveland Show, and American Dad.
Starring Seth Green (as Eli) and Giovanni Ribisi (as Warner), the show's central plot follows two video game designers who are living the life they always dreamt of until each one's respective father moves in with him. From ruining an important business negotiation to ruining a birthday party, the dads are obviously difficult to live with, and the show promises that more problems will arise.
Perhaps the biggest problem with this show is that it is trying too hard. While the overused laugh track is a common complaint among sitcoms, this show is loaded with jokes. Perhaps, even, too many jokes. Almost every line of dialogue seems to be a setup for a joke, or at least the punchline. Some jokes were actually quality, and a lot of the funny moments came from scenes in which little dialogue was involved. There even happened to be a few endearing scenes, but some of these were ruined by yet another attempt at being funny.
The show definitely has potential, however, so I wouldn't be so quick to eliminate it from the competition. One thing is for sure, though. It needs to step it up if it wants to continue past its first season.
