Wale- "Ambition" album review

By JORDON WARMINGTON

Many who know of Wale still consider him to be a pretty new artist. With the release of a very unsuccessful debut album, Wale decided to take a leave from Interscope Records. Soon after releasing a major mix tape, he signed with Rick Ross on Ross' new label, Maybach Music Group. What was different about this was that Ross allowed Wale to have complete control of what his music should sound like, something Interscope apparently would not allow.

Musically, Wale's debut album on MMG and his second studio album, "Ambition," show his growth and him expressing his music in the way he originally planned. There are very few features on the album in a way of showing his fans what his first album should have been like.

The album features Rick Ross, Lloyd, Ne-Yo, Big Sean, Miguel, Meek Mill, Kid Cudi and Jeremih. The big surprise on the album was Wale reconciling with Kid Cudi. The two had stopped working together completely after a major falling out in 2010. The song "Focused" on the album proves that they have resolved any issues and have brought back that incredible chemistry they had when they both appeared on XXL's Top Ten Freshmen list.

"Lotus Flower Bomb" featuring Miguel is the lead single on the album and one of the smooth and classier songs. It expresses the feel that Rick Ross has put behind his MMG label. "Slight Work" featuring Big Sean and produced by Diplo has the most liveliness out of all the songs on a mainly slow tempo album. It precedes the title track, "Ambition," which features labelmate Meek Mill and boss Rick Ross. This is the most soulful record on the album, as Wale and his labelmates put their hearts and pasts right in the track. The song is really about struggle and passion. Synths come in after a chilling piano symphony plays as the intro to the song, giving the feeling of a sad story turned into a triumphant legend.

Although the album may sound a bit repetitive or consistent, depending on who you are asking, Wale's album proves that he can do way better than his original album and that his career won't be going anywhere but up.
