THOUSANDS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS WILL NOW BE DOUBLE TAXED IF THEY BRING A CAR TO COLLEGE IN CONNECTICUT !!!

The new CT law that took effect in October 2004 has opened a Pandora's Box, it has permitted retroactive billing of vehicle taxes plus interest plus penalties plus liens on any vehicle a student brought to college for 90 days for the out of state students or two semesters for the Connecticut students. That means if they went to UConn for the spring semester, Yale for the summer semester and Central CT State University for the fall semester, you can and may receive four tax bills for the same car. One from your home town, one from Storrs, one from New Haven and one from New Britain. Don't say this can't happened...I did happen to me.

It will be protests and rallies on every campus across the state in an attempt to stop this unfair and unjust practice. The CT law has four exemptions written into it, there needs to be one more for students who have paid taxes in their home town to be exempt from additional double taxes or abolish the motor vehicle tax completely, Contact you state representative and let them know you want it stopped. Get your parents to help....they are the generation that defined COLLEGE PROTEST !!!

My daughter went to Sacred Heart University for 4 years and just lived off campus in the Bridgeport area, now she has three more years (post grad) to become a physician assistant. She attended Spring, Summer and Fall semesters there and now will continue this summer at SHU and then on to Yale or Quinnipiac for three more years. The Bridgeport assessor taxed me a thousand dollars of taxes, interest, penalties and liens on a car I already paid my taxes to in my home town.

The Republican Governor that signed this law into effect has got to get the legislature to correct this injustice of double taxation without representation now.

If you want to know more, email me. Don't believe me, call your local tax assessor....any vehicle brought in town for six months plus a day (less than 2 semesters) will be taxed and out of state vehicles will be taxed after only 90 days ( less than a semester). It is up to the legislator from the 154 towns to over rule the 15 cities to correct this problem. Make full time college students exempt or join the other 38 states that have abolished the taxes on motor vehicles.

154 Cities and Towns loose millions in tax dollars to the 15 cities with colleges.

The new motor vehicle tax law that went into effect on October 2004 will permit the 15 Cities that have colleges and universities will reap millions of dollars in motor vehicle taxes from the 154 cities and towns that provide the college students that bring a car to college. The new tax law permits the local college cities to tax the cars brought to campus, even if it is a Connecticut registered car, for a period of six months plus a day.... that is less than the fall and spring semesters. When you get the second tax bill, the state law states the burden is on the taxpayer to prove where they will pay the taxes. That means the tax payer has to hire an attorney, at thousands of dollars, to bring a Superior Court case before a judge to have the judge determine which town will get the taxes.... or if it is cheaper, they can just pay the double taxes. Or, much to the dismay and anger of the college student, their parents will not let them bring a car to campus at all. It is up to the legislator from the 154 towns to over rule the 15 cities to correct this problem. Make full time college students exempt or join the other 38 states that have abolished the taxes on motor vehicles.

Out of state college students can get up to four tax bills on the same car in the same year.

Connecticut motor vehicle tax law states that if an out-of-state registered vehicle is in a town for ninety days, that is less than a semester, will be liable for a full years taxes. If a college student goes to UConn for the spring semester, Yale for the summer semester and Central for the fall semester, that student can get four motor vehicle tax bills. One from Storrs, one from New Haven, one from New Britain and one from their home state. When you get the four tax bills, the state law states the burden is on the taxpayer to prove where they will pay the taxes. That means the tax payer has to hire an attorney, at thousands of dollars to bring a Superior Court case before a judge to have the judge determine which town will get the taxes.... or they can just pay the four tax bills. But you will still pay taxes to your home state and to a Connecticut city. It is up to the legislator from the 154 towns to over rule the 15 cities to correct this problem. Make full time college students exempt or join the other 38 states that have abolished the taxes on motor vehicles.

Retired AARP citizens summering in CT will be double taxed.

Retired persons that live out of state and are permanent residence in another state and spend ninety days in Connecticut will be liable for a full years motor vehicle taxes according to the new motor vehicle statute which went into effect October 2004. Snow-bird returning to summer in Connecticut will pay a full year worth of taxes to the city or town they are visiting regardless if they pay taxes in their home state. It is up to the legislator from the 154 towns to over rule the 15 cities to correct this problem. Make full time college students exempt or join the other 38 states that have abolished the taxes on motor vehicles.
