Music Review

Some people might think Kanye West is arrogant, but after releasing Late Registration on August 30th he has the right to be. On his sophomore album West proves to be more than just a rapper. He is an excellent musician who happens to work within the rap industry. Since the album’s release it has had chart topping success sitting at number one on the Billboard’s Top 200 List.
On this album he continues his trend of revamping as well as reinventing Old School songs into music that can be considered some of the greatest classics of our time. West goes further than recreating the old school sound, he redefines it. This album is the personification of true Hip Hop, due to his vast range of talents and lyrical content. Late Registration is filled with tracks that are poetic, comedic, and political. Kanye West has a unique way of entertaining his audience and making his audience aware of everyday issues all at the same time. Not only does he make you dance, but he also makes you think.
West operates so far outside of Rap music’s box, and the end result is a creation of a unique genre that resets the bar for what can be considered as a great rap song or album. What sets this album apart from the rest is the refreshing style and relevant substance. His choice to work with fellow producer Jon Brion who worked on Fiona Apple’s album worked in his favor.
Each song resembles a musical diary entry that allows his audience to get a deeper look into his psyche. There is a song for almost every mood. If your are feeling political check out “Heard ‘Em Say,” “Crack Music,” and “Diamonds From Sierra Leone.” If you are in a poetic mood check out “Addiction,” “Roses,” and “Hey Mama.” If you are in the mood to laugh all four skits are hilarious especially if you are into Greek life.
Anyone who dismiss his work because of his attitude, are doing a huge disservice to themselves. Kanye West has a lot to say. All you have to do is LISTEN.
