Q & A
What should I wear to an interview?
Great question! I'm sure tons of students are curious about the best way to dress for an interview. Here are some basic rules of thumb:
Guys, the most professional look for an interview is a suit. And most importantly: ALWAYS WEAR A TIE. Don't own a suit? Wear slacks and a button-down collared shirt. Remember to wear dark colored socks with your comfortable dress shoes (no sneakers, sorry!). Bed-head, last night's stench of beer, and remnants of pizza in your teeth are all no-nos. And don't think that dousing yourself in cologne is ever a good substitute for a shower!
Hey ladies! It's usually best to wear a pant or skirt suit to an interview. Keep it tasteful. So that micro-mini you wore to the club on Friday wouldn't be a good choice! If you want to wear a skirt, wear stockings (fishnets are frowned upon). Be sure you wear comfortable, close-toed shoes too. You don't want to have an unfortunate stiletto tumble down the hallway to the boss's office! Finally, go for a polished look: a neat manicure, light perfume, and tasteful makeup are a must. The interviewer wants to see YOU, and not the Halloween version of you!
Ladies and Gents Limit the amount of jewelry you wear to a professional interview. Be sure that all clothing is clean and ironed. Don't forget to check for tags, dangling thread, etc. If you have to question yourself in front of the mirror: "Is this too…" tight, big, or shiny? Career Services advises you to try again!
