Like Death and Taxes a Fee Hike is Certain

It is that lovely time of the year again, yes everyone knows what I am talking about, summer vacation. It is the time when we have to give up the liberty we enjoy being here and instead go back home to live under the rules of our parents once again. However, with the new school year coming up those expenses are going to get even higher as the fall 2006 fees and housing configurations change. While everyone thought $9,600 was expensive for a full-time tuition fee (per semester) last year, but in the fall it will be raised to $10,125. For dental hygiene students the cost of their tuition is $11,175, however health insurance is still at $520 for the year and yes the always necessary $40 for the student government will be placed on your bill. As for room and board people were told that as the years go by and your “status” changes your room and board will change as well, meaning it will decrease from year to year, but from the looks of it we were misinformed.
Freshman this year thought their rooms were expensive, but try next year’s freshman whose rooms (a double as a double) will cost them $4,800. As a sophomore you will have to pay $4,700 compared to this year’s price of $4,300 and seniors in the fall of 2006 will have to pay $3,800 which is the current price for juniors. Why so much money for half a room? And why such high prices now? For a single room if you dread the idea of a roommate it would run you around $5,700 for a single as a freshman! Everywhere you go though people are aware that college is not cheap, but at least students will have more options for the fall.
Freshman students as well as returning students will have the choice of living in Barnum, Bodine, or Seeley instead of the “First Year Experience” (the way it was done this year; all freshman students reside in Bodine only). Warner will have some changes as all rooms will be designated double as double or triple as triple and students who are graduate, E.L.I., Dental Hygiene, Chiropractic, Naturopathic, and/ or senior students who have completed 90 credit hours by May 2006 with a 3.2 cumulative GPA or higher will be allowed to live in Warner Hall. Sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduates who have GPA’s of 3.5 or higher will receive priority housing before other students. This, however, only applies to students who apply before April 21st. All of this information can be found in Residential Life and was sent out by email (how do you think I found all this out?). so, if you would like to know more please take the time and check your emails! Just be aware of the changes occurring for the fall so that you are not surprised by any strangely high numbers on your bill. I Hope everyone enjoys their summer vacation; see you in the fall.
