As many of you may know, our schools annual Senior Ball “Wisteria” was held on Friday night. Upon arrival its participants were greeted with all but happy news. Wisteria’s tradition has been a grand one. A night where those of legal age can unwind for the night and forget all the stress of finals, last minute deadlines and other such requirements with the help of an “open bar.” Though this year those dreams of inebriation were thwarted even before walking through the door.
Upon entering the venue instead of receiving the well known paper wristband which signals your ticket to fun, we received what I can only think to call “drink vouchers” along with the bad news that each person was only allowed three drinks for a four hour party. It was at this time that I wished I did not have so much experience with alcohol so that three drinks might be enough. Well, through much complaining this three drink maximum was upped to a whopping four drinks. Even if your tolerance is low enough for this limit to not hold anything back,it just seems that the school is treating us like children who lack the responsibility to control ourselves. Most of us might have only had four or five drinks a piece, the crux of the matter is that they unjustly restricted us. My question was, who was to blame for this? Representatives from the school said it was policy of the catering department of the club. Clubworkers said they knew nothing of that being their policy and named the school responsible for the cap. Being given the run-around leads me to some of my own conclusions, but since they are nothing more than my own personal feelings and speculations I shall leave them aside.
Although I will be gone come May 6th with the rest of my senior class compatriots I feel for the underclassmen. Do not let this happen again. This may be just another way for some higher ups in the food chain to phase out certain school traditions they deem unsavory. Do not sit idly by and let it happen. Wisteria and the departed “Booze Cruise” (which has been cancelled due to lack of fun. and funds from what I hear) are organized and thrown by the senior classes officers. Sign up and lend a hand to keep these traditions alive and restore them to their former states of glory. If you are one of the ones complaining about it, unless you try to change things, you have no right to talk.
