National Society of Black Engineers Convention

Nine students (Lyon Leslie, Wilfred Amuri, Kenneth Amuri, Bertrand Simon, Keyon Benneth, Jovin Joy, Ike Mogbana, Mohammed Ibrahim and I) in a joint sponsorship effort between The Student Government Association, and the Engineering Department attended the National Society of Black Engineers (NESBE) National Convention.
NESBE is an Organization that focuses on the enrichment of Black Engineers in today’s society. Each year an annual National Convention Workshop is held at various locations; this year the location was the David L. Lawrence Convention Center located in Pittsburg, PA. The NSBE convention provides numerous opportunities including, but not limited to, a “dynamic and interactive workshops on cutting edge technologies, attend one of the largest technical career fairs in the nation with over 400 companies, networking events and social activities such as, hearing uplifting and motivating speakers .”
Student Lyon Leslie was able to network with companies such as Intel, Microsoft, Clorox and HP and also attended a workshop on Computer Security.
When the group arrived at the convention I was in awe at the amount of students and Companies that were present. There were people from every culture; Asians, Indians, African American and Caucasians. I had never in my life seen so many engineers gathered in one place.
They were also prizes that were raffled off. The grand prize was a Scion XM, from Toyota; but no students from the university won, however we did not walk away empty handed. We won a copy of XP Professional, A HP Digital Camera with a picture printer, An HP Printer, HP Graphic Calculator and a one year subscription to XBOX 360 live.
In all it was a worth while experience that everyone enjoyed and we would like to thank the Student Government Association and the Engineering Department for sponsoring this event. And we look forward to making the NSBE an annual staple in the engineering curriculum.
Look forward to a NESBE chapter at the University in Fall 2006 .
