On Sunday April 9, a statement was made by Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi regarding Iran’s nuclear-energy related endeavors. “This is a psychological war launched by Americans because they feel angry and desperate regarding Iran’s nuclear dossier” was the point set forth by Asefi and other Iranian representatives. The accusations made by Iran state that the US was allegedly planning to inform the United Nations Security Council to impose sanctions against Iran. Iran states that any and all nuclear research that they are undertaking is solely for the purpose of energy and civilian uses.
The main concern from Iranian personnel in Tehran consisted of the possibility of US military strikes against Iranian atomic facilities as was noted in a previously published report. The fear that stemmed from this was that the US might have intentions to cripple Iran’s atomic research for illegitimate reasons. Asefi’s response to these reports states, “We will stand by our right to nuclear technology. It is our red line. We are ready to deal with any possible scenario. Iran is not afraid of threatening language.”
Asefi stated that Iran has always had positive relations with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and is willing to continue their cooperation in order to provide the proof necessary to diagnose the situation.
According to IAEA chief, Mohamed ElBaradei, who visited Iran on Friday April 7th in order to observe certain key aspects of the atomic program there, there was no sign of an active nuclear weapons program, but he plans to continue his investigation of all of Iran’s nuclear facilities. He is expected to give his final report at the end of the month which will hopefully answer for everyone if Iran poses a threat or if their nuclear program is strictly for civilian purposes.
As far as current matters are concerned, the United Nations has asked for a temporary halt on Iran’s uranium enrichment activities until an official report from the IAEA can be presented. It is mainly the concern of the United States and other western powers that the nuclear activities in Iran could be heading towards development of nuclear weapons.
