Waterbury, Conn. — The University of Bridgeport, under the direction of first-year Head Coach Valerie Steen, capped off the most successful season in school history with the ECAC Division II Championship. The Purple Knights defeated Teikyo Post for the fourth time this season in the semifinals, and then downed Adelphi by a 3-1 margin in the final. The win was UB’s third over Adelphi this season.
Game scores in the final were 30-22, 30-32, 30-27 and 30-22. Sophomore middle hitter Amy Neussl (Juneau, AK) helped UB fend off a pesky Adelphi team as she had 9 kills, 14 digs and 8 blocks. Jessica Herrman (Salina, KS) added 13 kills and 28 digs, on her way to Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors. She had a career-high 33 kills in UB’s semifinal romp. Jessi Bornack (Roselle, IL) also had a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs. Courtney Winstead (Red Bluff, CA) contributed 18 kills and 13 digs to go along with five blocks and junior setter Sinead Quirk (Wheaton, IL) had 46 assists.
“We came here with the goal of winning the tournament and we did that,” said Coach Steen. “It’s extra special to end the season on a winning note.”
UB lost in the first round of last year’s ECACs. They finish this year at 20-9, the program’s first 20-win season.
