Tuesday night the 1st of November just before midnight fire claimed the home of 11 UB students. The house, located on the corner of Austin and Park next to Famous Pizza, was the only building affected in the blaze. It took a little over an hour to put out the fire as it spread from the front porch to the third story. The Fire Marshall determined the cause of the fire to be “suspicious” so the case was turned over to arson investigators. No life threatening injuries were reported as a result of the fire although two students sustained minor injuries after jumping from the second story to escape the blaze. Although the building did not belong to the university many of the students have been given housing in the Residents Halls (the rest are staying with friends). Moondo Field an IPED Major who lived in the lower level of the house was watching a movie when he noticed something was wrong, “I heard glass breaking and looked out the window, that’s when I saw the flames.” Many of the students are international students and are recieving assistance from the office of international student affairs in replacing documents destroyed in fire such as passports and IDs. The students recieved aid from both the University and the Red Cross in the form of clothing and personal items. Kimikami Miyake who lived on the third floor refered to the situation, “They lost everything. What wasn’t burned up was damaged by water. Everything that a college student has, computers, books, clothing, everything.” Kimikami lost his own laptop in the fire. SGA’s portion of the proceeds from the Halloween party are going to the students affected by fire. If you have any questions please contact The Scribe via email, scribe@bridgeport.edu
