A few years ago, UB had several Greek organizations located on campus, but over the years they left UB as the members left and/or graduated. Recently, two organizations, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, and Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity, Incorporated came to the UB campus, recruiting students and holding events aimed at bringing the Greeks back to life on the campus.
The Sophisticated Sisters of Sigma Gamma Rho, also known as S.G.Rho, came to campus when now head members, Candace Dance and Nikki McDonald crossed over in spring 2003. Since then, the Sorority has had a rush which included four young ladies from the UB campus. These ladies crossed over last fall 2003 semester.
Since then S.G Rho has gained their place on the campus by holding together several social events as well as informationals. The known Sigma Spa allows all students to have access to their own on-campus nail salon and spa. Here, one can enjoy everything from back massages and facials to manicures and pedicures.
Other upcoming events for S.G Rho are the Spades Tournament 04, 04 Chess Tournament, and a step show that will include performances from at least 5 of the divine nine Greek organizations.
The Oh So Smooth brothers of the Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity, has also made their way on campus when, now members Goya and Chaydo, crossed over and have had an impact on the male students here at UB.
The Fraternity has held many informationals located in the student center for anyone who is interested in joining the organization as well as throwing one of UB’s first real Greek parties.
On February 27th, the Latino Fraternity held its first party located in the social room of the student center. Students from all over campus, as well as outside members of the Fraternity joined together in the army fatigue themed party. The party that had over two hundred people was a hit; the atmosphere, crowd and D.J were all on point throughout the entire night.
The Fraternity hopes to get many more members and hopes to open up the campus with more Greek like. In the future, the organization is planning to bring there girl version of the Fraternity to campus to open up to the female students.
When asked, both organizations said they wanted to bring both Greek life awareness to the campus and students of UB.
LSU, although a Latino fraternity, has members of all different races and being at UB, a school that is so diverse, gives us a chance to tech all the students about Greek life and make the campus courses and activated reflect on the students, says LSU member Goya.
Students on campus have not had the opportunity to experience fraternities and sororities life as at other colleges, but now they would get the chance. Both organizations plan to fulfill their quota by having many community service events as well as other functions on and off of campus.
UB is without a doubt in for a treat once these organizations start to grow. In the future, other organizations such as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated in addition to the female version of LSU, called Mu Sigma Upsilon, Sorority as well as many more plan to hold informationals on campus also.
UB is defiantly bringing its Greek life back to life.
