Secure the Border at What Coast?

Illegal immigration is an issue on the mind of everyone from the global economist to the restaurant dishwasher. Should illegal immigrants be allowed to work in the U.S? While many feel that the U.S should have more control on the border, many have asked themselves, “How can I let my fellow human being go back to the low living standards that drove them to cross the Mexican border in the first place? Don’t they have the same unalienable rights as any other human?” Recently, Texas governor Rick Perry announced a new plan for increasing law enforcement on the Mexico-Texas border. “Operation Linebacker” will provide the Texas Border Sheriff’s Coalition with $3 million to hire additional deputies, $3 million for overtime pay and $3.7 million for other miscellaneous use for Perry’s new improvement of security.
The plan also calls for four deployment teams of 50 state troopers, and 54 new state criminal investigators on the border. A meeting will take place with U.S Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez and Mexican Attorney General Daniel Cabeza De Vaca in San Antonio, Texas to discuss this issue further. No agreement has been made, so there is no guarantee that this plan will actually go through. Although Mexican President Vicente Fox is trying to do his part to make sure less people are killed, Mexico feels that the U.S should “allow more legal migration and respect the rights of Mexicans north of the border.” Mexico absolutely does not want to “militarize the border,” but Texas has a whole other idea as to how to handle the situation. One thing is for sure, if both countries establish new ways of allowing legal migration and if they would respect the human rights of others, then less violence would occur.
