For anyone who was here last year, they know that the Black Student Alliance wasn’t the most functional, organized, and involved club on campus. However, this year, it seems that it wasn’t the club, but the people in charge, because BSA is back!
Starting the year off right with all new executive members, the club gained back its title by becoming one of the most involved and dedicated clubs on campus. Throwing events like the Flag Party, which was only planned and organized in a week’s time, and had a big turnout. People from all over came representing their country with either flags hanging from their pockets or shirts and outfits designed in their native land’s colors. Another successful event was the Halloween Party, which was thrown last year under the Freshmen Class, and returned this year, underneath BSA.
BSA wasn’t only focused on parties, but also held a few events that were dedicated to the students. These events included, Showtime @ UB, which is a university version of Showtime at the Apollo, a talent showcase, and the Soul Food Dinner that was designed to let the students taste some delicious traditional Down South cooking in honor of Black History Month.
One of the most successful events this spring semester however, was the Tip Drill party. This party brought in the most people out of every other party thrown this semester. People from Scared Heart and Fairfield University, the Bridgeport area, and even students from local High Schools were all crowded into the Social Room on April 8th. The crowd was so overwhelming that Campus Security had to shut down the student center, not allowing anymore people into the building. The party, which is named after a recent song, was packed to capacity with people dancing and having fun to the sounds of a very talented DJ that played in front of a movie theater size screen playing music videos. Although there were a few minor issues and problems, people defiantly enjoyed themselves.
This year BSA has had the chance to come back strong and show the students of UB what they are really about. UB hopes that President Kimberly Hunter and Vice-President Victor Bowman continue to do their best next year and keep the Black Student Alliance’s name on the rise.
