Any officially registered UB undergraduate student may submit a solution for this problem. Solutions should be submitted to Dr. Eigel through the Math and Science secretary. The office is located on the first floor in Dana Hall. The deadline for submission is nooon on Tuesday, September 21, 2004. A correct soultion will be posted after the noon deadline. The Department of Arcane Studeies at a large midwestern university used letters of the alphabet to represent the digits one through nine. In one of the codes used, the digits were represented by the capital letters A through I. The correspondences were chosen so that
A+B+C=C+D+E=E+F+G=G+H+I
and so that the sum of those four equal numbers was as large as possible. If A represents 7, what digit does B represent?
