You don’t have to be a Political Science/IPED major to know what’s going on in the world today. Being informed about other nations is important. Venezuela is a country which most people know little about, but you don’t have to be from there to know what’s happening with this country. President Hugo Chavez has a lot of different plans for the country within the next few years.
Venezuela plans to invest $900 million over the next five years, which will go towards cultivating 740,000 acres of Sugar cane and 15 ethanol plants for gasoline production. Chavez is a big supporter of Fidel Castro and blames United States style capitalism for Venezuela’s poverty and he wants to move the country toward a new socialist system. He feels that by producing ethanol, the country will no longer have to import it and this will provide more jobs, which will ease poverty and support economic reforms.
Venezuela is also planning to reduce the amount of oil that is sold to the United States. Could gas prices go up? Possibly, since Venezuela is the fourth largest supplier of oil to the US. Many analysts such as Thomas A. Shannon (Senior Official for Latin Affairs at the National Security Council) feel that Venezuela will not be able to find another market that would give them as much money as the US does. Many feel it will harm the country more than help it. What the country decides to do and the future for Venezuela is all put upon President Hugo Chavez.
