UB Moves Forward on New Athletic Field

Plans are being made to turn the Chiropractic parking lot, one of the University’s most cramped lots, into a soccer field. As a consequence of scheduling conflicts with using Seaside Park for soccer games, this is being done with the idea that it will be a major enhancement to UB.
As told by Thomas Oates, (Vice President, Treasurer and CFO) and Gregory Breland (Special Projects Director), one of the main reasons for this change is that UB’s soccer games are currently held at Seaside Park. Arrangements for using Seaside Park are not permanent and are only for certain dates. Problems generally arise when bad weather results in postponement of games. In these instances, conflicts may result when trying to reschedule the games. After looking at the University as a whole, it was decided that there was only one spot that would make a successful alternative. Though it will be called a soccer field because of NCAA requirements, students will be free to utilize the field for other activities such as Frisbee and cricket. Some students have talked about the fact that the Chiropractic parking lot is usually very packed. Many have wondered where they will park their vehicles. Apparently, the University was surveyed and the conclusion was made that there are a lot of other parking lots, like the one behind the Student Center, that are usually quite empty. If this plan takes effect, students would have to take advantage of other options such as that. This plan is not definite and there are still a lot of “ifs.” However, funds by means of donations and fund-raising events have been invested in this project. Arrangements are being made with the City of Bridgeport regarding the possibility of closing one block of Lafayette Street and one block of Hazel Street for the plan. Only time will tell whether the project will indeed be an enhancement to the University.
