String of Thefts at UB

Several thefts have been reported to Campus security recently. Five incidents between December 2004 and the present have been documented. Two of the thefts occurred in Wahlstrom Library and one occurred in Carlson Hall. In a bulletin posted on January 26th 2005, Campus Security gave a description of one suspect who has been seen around campus. The bulletin and a photo of the suspect are posted in many of the academic buildings including Dana Hall and the Student Center. According to the bulletin, the suspect is a black male, forty-seven years old, of medium build, is about five feet and seven inches tall, and well dressed. In order to blend in on campus, the suspect may pose as a student. This man has been a suspect in similar incidents at other schools in the area. The University of Bridgeport, the Bridgeport Police Department and other area schools are working together to prevent further incidents of this nature.
With a small student population it should not be difficult to detect those who are not students, faculty, or staff. However, the University of Bridgeport has an open campus policy, which means that anyone is welcome to visit. It is apparent that not all visitors are using the campus for the purpose it is intended. Campus Security is calling this type of theft a crime of opportunity and urges students to be vigilant. To prevent this type of crime, it is important that each student not leave their belongings unattended.
Thankfully none of the thefts involved violence. Unfortunately no one has been
able to catch the thief in the act. If you have any information to offer, or questions about the incidents, you should contact the Department of Campus Security at (203)576-4911.
