The Martin Luther King Service Initiative

Dear Friends,Welcome and thank you for joining us in celebrating and honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by learning about Dr. King’s dream and
serving the community. The program, organized by the University of Bridgeport, in collaboration with local and national organizations, is united under the theme “Celebrate, Serve, Learn & Honor.”
The call to service on Dr. King’s birthday January 17, 2005 and the three weeks surrounding it, stems from the recognition of Dr. King’s legacy of social action and service. But perhaps it is best expressed in the words of Dr. King’s wife–Coretta Scott King:

“Martin Luther King Jr. Day is not only for celebration and remembrance, education and tribute, but abov e all a day of service….it is a day of volunteering to feed the hungry, rehabilitate housing, tutor those who can’t read, mentor at risk youngsters, console the broken hearted and a thousand other projects for building the beloved community of his dream.”

The program will consist of three major parts:
Celebrate: We will promote the celebration of Martin Luther King Day of Service to our entire campus community and make it an officially
recognized HOLIDAY at UB to honor Dr. King’s historical connection with it.
Serve: We will encourage participation in a variety of community-wide SERVICE PROJECTS that honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service,
Learn: We will host a Public Forum on January 31st, 2005 at 7pm in the UB Student Center’s Private Dining Room. All students, faculty, staff and members of the greater Bridgeport community are encouraged to attend.
Please, call or e-mail us to sign up for the project(s) of your choice.
