Jeffreys Leads Men’s Basketball Past Eighth-Ranked Philadelphia

Bridgeport, Conn. — Led by 20 points from junior Kevin Jeffreys, the UB men’s basketball team upset No. 8-ranked Philadelphia by a 76-70 final on Saturday afternoon. The win is the third straight for UB and gives the Purple Knights a 6-2 overall record for the Fall semester schedule. UB is now off until a January 5th meeting with C.W. Post.The Purple Knights came out playing well in the first half and built an eight-point lead on a pair of Ramel Allen free throws with 3:48 left to make it 35-27. The Rams had other ideas though as they closed the half on a 10-2 run and took the game into the break tied at 37-37.
Philadelphia came out strong in the second half, opening with a 7-0 run that was capped by a three-pointer from D.J. Fritz for a 44-37 edge. The Purple Knights hung tough though and tied the game at 52-52 on a jumper by Jeremy Benjamin. UB would go ahead for good with 10:04 remaining on a short jumper from Terence Wilkins and built the lead to as many as 12 in the final 10 minutes.
In addition to Jeffreys posting double figures, Wilkins and
Allen each posted solid games with 16 and 18 points each, respectively. Allen also had 11 rebounds for the double-double, as well as three blocked shots. UB
Brent Welton lit up UB for 24 points for the Rams, connecting on 9-of-21 from the field. The UB defense slowed him in the second half, along with the entire Philly team, as the Rams hit just 39.3 percent of their shots after the half. Fritz and Tayron Thomas each posted 15 points, while Brian Tomko had 10 points. Thomas scored his 1,000th career point in the second half, giving the Rams three starters who have reached the 1,000-point plateau in their careers.
UB is now 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the NYCAC. Philadelphia falls to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the NYCAC.
