The World Cup 2005

The World Cup has a long tradition here at UB hosted each Fall by the World CARP Student Organization. This year it was held during International Education Week. The main aim of the Tournament is to foster international harmony through sportsmanship. This year six teams, comprised of current students and alumni, participated. The nations/regions represented included: The United States of America, Latin America, Japan, Africa, and Korea. There were two Korean teams entered. President Salonen gave an address to kick off the event. There were refreshments of granola bars, rice balls and bottled water. All the teams played hard, but in the end only one could be named Champion. In the Semifinal round Team Africa went head to head with Team Korea 2 and Latin America went up against Team Korea 1. The final match of Africa versus Latin America was heated and ended 3-1 Africa. Best Sportsmanship Award went to Team USA (they were the only team that did not get a yellow or red card). Team Africa recieved an extra award of fifty dollars for having ten or more fans wearing their team colors. Obakeng Phiri and Leslie Abby served as referees during the matches.
