Movie Review: Rambo

What can I say about the newest installment of the Rambo franchise except
that after the credits started rolling, I
looked at my friends and said, “Can we
stay and watch that again?” This movie
was the epitome of action and it far
surpasses all of the previous movies of
the franchise.

The story starts with John Rambo, a Vietnam veteran, operating a riverboat in Asia. A group of Christian aid workers enlist the help of Rambo to bring them into Burma, a country that has had a civil war raging in it for decades. After a close run in with Burmese Pirates, Rambo safely delivers the group into Burma and is told that he is not needed for a return trip as the group wishes to return by land.

After a few minutes of peace and tranquility in the village, mortar shells
start ripping the village apart. Burmese
militants kill the residents of the village
and kidnap the Christian aid workers. Rambo learns of this from the church group’s pastor and leads a band of mercenaries into Burma to rescue the kidnapped and helpless Americans.

The first thing I noticed about this movie is that the original theme of the
old Rambo movies is still there, but evolved. The theme is carried out in various forms throughout the movie giving anyone who remembers the theme a thrill and anyone who has forgotten it a familiar feeling. The cinematography is fantastic, and Sylvester Stallone (director/John Rambo) knew precisely how to time his movie. Scenes are not too long or short, and flashbacks are vivid and electrifying.

As far as action goes, there is no shortage here. With a kill count approaching 300, it’s the bloodiest Rambo yet and I loved every minute of it. The gore is very realistic and a little horrifying at times, but it is never overdone. If you are into pure action and
an insane amount of carnage, this is the
movie for you. I give it a 9 out of 10.
