The University of Bridgeport has been upgrading since before my freshman year in Fall 2006. Like any other esteemed university, UB has been going through some positive renovations. The field in front of Dana Hall was so lifeless and most students and staff were using it as a parking lot. Now it’s a brand new soccer field. Residence Life has gone through some changes as well as they now have a new office located in Seely hall.
No doubt UB is progressing! The Student Government Association and Dean Vincent Holmes have many events and plans for UB’s future. We have all heard of great plans for Bridgeport and even more so for our University. Now there is another exciting revelation at UB. Donna Oropall and Edina Oestreicher have led two fantastic groups of students to plan events and lead UB. Last Semester Donna Oropall brought together Leaders Unite. Unlike U-BET (University of Bridgeport Events Team) this group reads great leaders like Ernest Shackelton and discusses the qualities of being a leader. After a few meetings, the student leaders had decided to take care of their environment around the campus.
Leaders Unite took the initiative and organized a meeting with director of Building and Grounds Tom Sweeney as well as Rolando Delahoz. Unicco had attempted a recycling program once before, but it was unsuccessful because most students threw a lot of trash in the recycling bins. Another factor for the non-existent recycling program was the lack of awareness.
Leaders Unite has implemented a way to raise awareness in our University with the help of Philippe Valiquettelalonve, Lindsay Casso and Britney Coutu. These leaders have designed a tri-pod (3 layered brochure) to publicize recycling commencement at UB. Our second meeting with Unicco will ensured us full support with this scheme. Unicco bought new bins designed to recycle and raise awareness.
The bins are equipped with 4 dividers recycling glass, paper, plastic and cardboard. These bins will be placed at the lobby of all four residence halls as well as the following major buildings around campus:
1. Knights End Café
2. Student Center
3. Residential Halls
4. Library
5. ABC Building
6. END Hall
7. Dana Hall
8. Chiropractic
9. Carlson Hall
10. Mandeville Hall
11. Tech Building
12. Mailroom
13. Marina
