The University of Bridgeport contains many different students with many different talents. When those students come together to create a project it can be monumental or catastrophic. For “GS” or “Goon Squad”, a rap group from the University of Bridgeport, it has been not only successful, but could one day make them nationwide stars.
The group GS met in 2004. They were originally Murphy Oboh, AKA “Yng Murph,” Walter Garrison, AKA “Pep La France,” Jeremy Benjamin, Steven Boshwick, AKA “Wise Clark,” and Eric, AKA “Edemic.” The management
is Robert Maynard, AKA “Rob Money,” Jerrel Gibson, AKA “Rel Rugar,” and Troy Hall, AKA “Bip”.
The name Goon Squad came from another famous Hip Hop group. Edemic said that they all idolized “Dip Set”, or the “Diplomats,” a rap group out of Harlem. They now go by just GS.
Even though the group is influenced by Dip Set, they also have other influences.”Biggie is my idol, I also love 50 Cent’s hooks,” Edemic said. The hook is the part of the song between the verses.
“We sound like the Lox,” he said. The Lox is also another famous rap group.
Although the group has been going strong since 2004, their debut album “World Magazine” dropped in 2005 with shows at Southern University and the recent show where they opened for fellow rapper Jason Foxx. Things were not always perfect. Original member Jeremy Benjamin decided to go in another direction and left the group this year, opting to focus on basketball.
So now three years and one less member later the group is back with another album. “In A Class By Ourselves” is the new album that is set to be released sometime in November of 2007.
“The best song on the new album is ‘One life to live,'” Rob Money said.
Def Jam Records and Sony Records have shown an interest
in them. Now they are not functioning under a record label. Everything has been independent.
Many Hip Hop groups do not last once they get a record deal. Rapper Busta Rhymes has been seen rocking his “Leaders Of The New School” chain. That was a group that he was in that broke up right before a performance.
“We are better in a group than we are apart,” Edemic said.
In response to how long will they remain in a group, Money said, “We are going to do it until we make it. We are going to make it.”
The album is called “In A Class By Ourselves” and is coming soon in mid November. Be on the lookout for the DVD as well.
