Wondering why Marina had colorful flags and cultural music playing in the background last week? Every year International Education Week is held in November by the
International Awareness Club. This year it took place from November 13 th through the 17th in Marina Dining Hall. It is a week long event that took place last year in 77 different countries and all 50 states. This event is in joint with the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education. The idea behind the International Education Week is “to promote programs that prepare
Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.” Five countries were represented during this week: Sweden, Thailand, South Africa, Brazil and Germany.Music from each country was played during lunch time at Marina and students had the opportunity to participate in a quiz that tested their knowledge on geography, flag identification, and other insightful questions. Prizes were given out to students who had the most correct answers. Students also had the opportunity to sign up for receiving information from the International College about studying abroad.
The International Awareness Club promoted this event in order to get students aware of other cultures as the University of Bridgeport community is made up of so many different diverse ethnic backgrounds. If you’d like to find out more information about International Education Week you can log onto the official website at http://iew.state.gov/ and if you’d like to join the in helping out next year for this event the International Awareness Club has meetings every Tuesday at 4 pm in Twisted Caf.
