Fantastic Season for Women’s Soccer

The purple knights women’s soccer season
has been a phenomenal one. It all started out a bit slow with four losses in their first six games, but those only one more loss was to be added on to the knight’s schedule for the rest of the season. They did not lose a game after September 29th and a game against the University of New Haven, and finished the season with a record of 17-5-2. The team won the East Coast Conference and the ECAC Championship to finish off the greatest season in the University of Bridgeport Women’s Soccer history. Forwards Therese Peterson (Lule†, Sweden) and Sofia Hoflin (™stersund,Sweden) created a fierce combination and the results showed. Peterson broke every Bridgeport single-season offensive school record for goals, goals per game, points,
points per game and game winning goals. The
new school record for goals scored a single season: 27. Tess ranks fifth in the nation
through all three divisions with her overall number of goals and second in NCAA Div II in number of goal scored in a game with four. After only two seasons Tess ranks third All-Time at UB in points and third All-Time in goals. She was also named the Northest Region Player of the Year.

But it doesn’t end there, Freshman Sofia Hoflin was chosen Rookie of the Year in the East Coast Conference and set the new UB goal scoring (19) and points record for a freshman. She was named ECC rookie of the week three times and second in the nation in goals scored by a freshman.

The forwards created a threat in the front, but soccer is a team sport and more is needed to succeed than a fierce offence. This year the Lady Purple Knights had it all. A solid back was formed by freshman defenders Emma Wolley ( Sheffield, England), Eilis Nevis (Ballyhaunis, Ireland) and Senior Nicola Ireson (Todmorden, England) who was named Most Outstanding Player in the ECAC.

Wolley and Peterson were selected into the Division II Women’s Soccer Northeast region first team and Hoflin into the second team. Hoflin, Peterson and Woolley were also chosen into the All-ECC first team, Jami Elliott ( Cumberland, RI) was chosen into the second team and Nevin and Amanda Roche (Darthmouth, Nova Scotia) into the third team.
