I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new and returning students as well as the faculty and staff for the Fall 2006 semester. Campus Security is located in Norseman Hall directly behind the Wahlstrom Library. For your safety and convenience, there is an ATM (New Alliance Bank) located in the vestibule of our office. Campus Security is contracted for UB by Securitas Security Services Inc. Our office is staffed by 37 personnel and operates 24 hours, 7 days a week, year round. The patrol unit consists of supervisors on patrol in a high visibility vehicle, along with varying numbers of uniformed patrols on foot and bicycle.Shift supervisors are trained in First Aid, CPR and AED (which is carried in the vehicle at all times). We receive complaints and requests for service within the UB community, dispatch personnel to handle the calls and record the information of these calls. We also monitor intrusion, fire and boiler alarms for campus property. In addition, we are responsible for building safety inspections and conduct investigations. We monitor and provide beepers (PAL) to the campus community. The Personal Alarm Locator or PAL, allows an individual to immediately summon help in the event of an emergency within the campus boundaries. It is a small and easily carried device which acts as a beeper, sending signals to the security office computer system when activated. Once activated, the computer screen provides the individual’s personal information, ID photo and the location from where the device was activated. The information is viewed by the dispatcher and is passed on to the patrol officers. Officers immediately respond to the call in search of the individual who activated the device. This device can be obtained through the Security department 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Walking escorts are provided on campus only. There is a shuttle bus service that transports students around the campus and its perimeter. For further information, you can contact Student Programming in the Student Center. Schedules are also available in our office. An emergency phone line has been installed in our office. This can be used to receive notification of school closings or cancellation of classes. The number is 576-4159.
Resident Halls are staffed by Resident Hall Monitors and Campus Security Officers, doing access control. The halls are equipped with CCTV cameras and are monitored in the security office. The doors to all halls are accessed by their student identification proximity cards. The ID’s are issued by Campus Security Monday through Friday 8 Pm to 4 PM. For exceptions to these hours, you must call our office and schedule an appointment. The bar codes on the back of your ID’s are for your meal plans and library services. If you own a vehicle, you must come to our office and obtain a parking permit. We also provide services for vehicle lock outs (waiver required) or dead batteries. The “Lost and Found” is located in our office.
If you are ever in need of emergency assistance, please contact Campus Security at 576-4911 or 4912.
If the call is regarding a request for information or is not an emergency situation, contact Security at 576-4913.
I leave you with our motto,
“SECURITY IS EVERYONE’S RESPONSIBILITY”
