Peru and Doom: Hand in Hand

It is incredible how people could create their own doom or help themselves. This is what I strongly believe when I take a glimpse of what is happening in Peru, a South American country located on the middle west of the continent. Peru is one of the largest countries in the northern Andean area and is the top exporter of fish meal in the world. Approximately five years ago, the now President Alejandro Toledo, created a huge division in the country: the fact? He was from Amerindian descent. Peru is composed of one of the largest populations of Amerindians in South America, if not perhaps the largest. In the old days of the Empires, it was the epicenter of culture and power. Nevertheless, with the intrusion of Europeans, the Amerindian class was subjugated.
Moreover, the issue is not whether he is from Amerindian descent or not. The real problem is that he is not capable of governing this country. Five years of devaluation of the “Nuevo Sol” currency, economic repression and doubtful management, now brings the time for new elections. The Peruvians can now choose between another Amerindian descendent, a well educated “oligarchy” woman and an ex president. What is left for them to choose, but what really represents them? Exactly. they will not go for the well educated woman representing the right wing or the ex president of the mid 80s, but for the brutal and clueless Ollanta Humala.
Ollanta Humala even before achieving power has already been the center of controversy. Only by rising as the supreme candidate in the polls, he has created 1.2% further devaluation of the Nuevo Sol against the US Dollar. This has created national concern, but apparently has not affected those who are the majority: the people. Not only has Peru suffered devaluation of its currency, but also the risk of the country at the Morgan Index in New York has risen 35 points. It seems that choosing Humala could be a curse, the Lima stock market has also seen its largest fall of the year 4.08%.
We, people that are outside the country, are alarmed at the prospect of the issues that such an important economic partner is facing. Also, the international community needs to be fully aware since this man has been raised in a home where homophobia, indigenous racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, and militarism are as normal as a glass of wine for festivities. Now, we must ask ourselves the question: “Why do people try to engage in activities that could harm them?” It is incredibly unbelievable to want to get rid of a president with the same background as a new candidate and still vote for him. Sometimes people in South America are too sentimental and let themselves be conducted by their passions. I feel this is the main reason why the area has been facing problems in these past decades.
If Ollanta Humala is chosen as president of Peru, this country instead of developing will go back a couple of decades. It is not a matter of what is Humalas’ background, but what are his beliefs. Peru needs a tough hand to lead it to the next century, into which we have wandered aimlessly for six years. If Peruvians do not want to elect a President who can lead them properly, then possibly in the next few years we are going to have a new Chavez in the region.
