Shortly after the last edition of The Scribe was posted online a submission was accepted that appeared to be a bio of Dr. Jonathan Lavelle*. It turns out that Dr. Lavelle had been written up in the National Chiropractic Board’s newsletter, in UB Highlights and the Chiro Post. Well, Dr. Lavelle, being the magnanimous educator and clinician he is, was not about to leave our publication out. I don’t think he expected that the message he submitted to the website would be posted in full on the website. It was funny to read mostly because at the end of his submission he included directions on how to obtain a stock photo of himself from Larry Orman in the publications department. It also included a description of the contents of the photo. I do not know why, but it cracked me up. I think that The Scribe should celebrate Dr. Lavelle for being so helpful and I do think his accomplishments are newsworthy assets to the University so I asked him for a proper interview.
Dr. Lavelle was elected to write the acupuncture examination for the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) for the forth consecutive year. Basically that means that he along with three other people created 200 questions each and then got together and decided which of the 800 questions would make it on to the two different 200 item versions of the exam. He spent fours days and three nights in Greeley, Colorado. He and his contemporaries accomplished the feat over the weekend of October 27-30. According to Dr. Lavelle, “It is estimated that over one half of the United States licensed chiropractors practice acupuncture in one form or another.” The purpose of the exam is to measure the competency of those chiropractors who wish to practice acupuncture and also to “standardize principles and practice of acupuncture for the chiropractic profession.” Dr. Lavelle was the Director of the Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Program here at UB from 1998-2000 he was responsible for creating the foundation of the present program and currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Services in the UB College of Chiropractic. Dr. Lavelle was also named to the Council of Chiropractic Examiners (CCE) Commission on Accreditation Site Team Academy. He will travel to other Doctor of Chiropractic Programs (DCP) throughout the United States making assessments of those DCP implementing CCE standards.
