In a must-win situation, the University of Bridgeport had to match up against regionally ranked C.W. Post to reserve them a spot in the NCAA tournament. But this game would not come easy as showed in the first half when C.W. Post came out very strong, controlling the ball and the game clock.
Senior Lilja Valthorsdottir notched her 15th goal of the season in the 54th minute to give the Purple Knights a 1-0 lead. UB was lead by the great defense of Phoenix College transfer, Sarah Hodge, and goalkeeper Thora Reyn Rognvaldsdottir, and the lady knights were able to maintain a first half shutout.
Later in the second half the Bridgeport defense came out very aggressive and strong, but in the 80th minute of the game, C.W. Post’s Denise Domena, scored her third consecutive game deciding goal, tying the game at one. At the end of regulation, each team went into overtime looking to pull out a victory after a hard-fought match by both teams. It was behind the goalkeeping of Thora Reyn Rognvaldsdottir for UB and the entire Post defense, that neither team was able to find the back of the net. After 110 minutes of soccer, the game ended in a tie, giving the Purple Knights a NYCAC berth, and another chance to make an NCAA regional.
