Her head did not do a 360 and there was no scary, disgusting vomit scene, but the flashback scenes of Emily’s possession in The Exorcism of Emily Rose are horrifying enough that you wouldn’t want to watch the movie alone. The possession scenes were all told in a series of flashbacks via courtroom testimony from witnesses and jailhouse interviews between attorney Erin C. Brunner (Laura Linney) and incarcerated priest, Father Richard T. Moore (Tom Wilkinson) who was charged with negligent homicide after Emily Rose’s (Jennifer Carpenter) death.
The story is actually about Attorney Brunner who must figure out a way of defending Father Moore without embarrassing the archdiocese and the law firm in which she works. It seem there is no place for the supernatural in a court of law.
Father Moore was charged with Emily’s death because it was thought that Emily needed medical treatment and not spiritual help, which was what Emily wanted. Obviously the exorcism didn’t work. The Exorcism of Emily Rose was based on a true story and while it may not have been as horrifying as its 1973 counterpart, the storyline is a good one. If you believe in the supernatural, the horror aspect of the film can be terrifying enough to keep you up late at night.
