UB Volleyball: Playoff Bound

On October 20, in a must-win situation, The University of Bridgeport Women’s Volleyball team squared off against second ranked Queens College in a NYCAC battle. The Lady Knights came into this game having already clinched a berth in the NYCAC playoffs, but the mindset of this team is still, “NCAA Regional or bust,” said junior middle hitter Amy Neussl. The Purple Knights jumped out to an early 10-1 lead but Queens College gave them a run for their money, cutting the deficit to three points late in the game. It was behind the veteran leadership of Amy Neussl and great defensive play by outside hitter Jessica Bornack that UB was able to pull out a game-one win. “Intensity is a must from here on out. We have to have a tough mentality for the rest of the season if we want to put on a show in the NYCAC tournament,” said junior Jesse Bornack. In games two and three UB found their rhythm, which allowed them to defeat Queens by a final score of 3-0, completing the sweep. From here on out the Purple Knights are playing for seeding in the region and upping their chances for NCAA play. It will not be an easy road, however, as they will be put to the test when they face out-of-conference team, Assumption College, in a quest for an NCAA regional berth. I asked team captain Amy Neussl what she thinks is the most important thing for the rest of the season and her reply was, “Focus. We have to stay focused from here on out and aim high for an NCAA regional berth.
