Turkey to Join the EU?

As of Monday, October 3rd, despite Austria’s stubborn resistance, an agreement, after two days of fierce discussions and an eleventh-hour deal was made to start negotiations on Turkey permanently becoming a part of the European Union. This is a big step forward in strengthening relations between the Islamic world and the west. Turkey is an essential Muslim nation that straddles politically and geographically the East-West divide. It is already a member of NATO and has been trying for decades to become a member of the EU. Turkey is a county made up of both western and eastern societies and it prides itself on being able to blend the ideas and attitudes of both worlds together. Turkey’s journey to the EU has not been a smooth one. Starting off with the country’s reluctance to give up the death penalty, since no member of the EU is allowed the option of the death penalty. There were also problems with the EU members fear and concern that Turkey will become an open port for not just illegal but legal immigration from the Middle East. Though finally, with Turkey’s portrayal of its membership being a way to bridge the gap between the Islamic and Christian worlds and in regards to Islamic extremism, could possibly reduce some of the tension that contributes to it, it was wisely accepted into one of the worlds most powerful economic and trade organizations. Even though this is just the beginning, for membership negotiations could take up to ten years, it is still an important point in Turkish history. For its the end of Turkey’s 42 year mission to become a part of this economic alliance.
