SPOT LIGHT on CLUBS

On September 7, 2005 students had the opportunity to meet some of the leaders for the clubs on campus. As a result many students signed up for the clubs they were interested in and have become very active members working to enrich the UB community. For those who missed this opportunity, here are some brief write-ups from some of the clubs present at the activity fair.ALPHA PHI ALPHA – Founded at Cornell University in Ithaca in 1906, it was the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African-Americans. Its objectives are to stimulate the ambition of its members, to prepare them for the greatest usefulness in the cause of humanity, freedom, and dignity of the individual, to encourage the highest and noblest form of manhood, and to aid downtrodden humanity in its efforts to achieve higher social, economic, and intellectual status. BLACK STUDENT ALLIANCE – The mission of the Black Student Alliance (BSA) is to create and provide a sense of community within the University. BSA does this by providing social activities, community services, and employment opportunities to members. Meetings are held in the private dining room of the student center. FRIENDS CLUB – This club’s purpose is to get to know each other, to get to know other cultures, and to establish better relationships. For more information please contact Tadayoshi Kaneko at tkaneko@bridgeport.edu.

KUNTAO JIU-JITSU – Learn how to defend yourself against any opponent, regardless size! No martial arts experience necessary to join or participate. There is also no commitment to stay or attend every class. Classes meet on Mondays from 6:00 – 8:00pm and on Wednesdays from 6:30 – 8:30pm in the Martial Arts Room are Wheeler Recreation Center. OMEGA PSI PHI – This fraternity also known as the “que dogs” is a black Greek organization founded in 1911 on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C. Its motto is “friendship is essential to the soul” and its cardinal principles are Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift. The official colors of the fraternity are royal purple and old gold. Omega Psi Phi engages in numerous national and international community service programs which serve the needs of millions worldwide. SCUBA – This club is the oldest club on campus, and they want to hear what you have to say. Don’t worry about getting your hair wet because the only diving that members do is for thoughts! For more information please contact Asha Dadlani at asha4u123@aol.com

SERVICE FOR PEACE – This club is for everyone who wants to improve themselves and their communities and work for lasting peace. Our service programs deepen cooperation between diverse groups and communities and the world, leading to lasting change. TEMPTED 2 DANCE – This club started last year, primarily does Hip-Hop dances but can also do other styles of dance. This year they are back and better than ever. If you are interested please contact Adelaide Bennett at ext. 3227 or at abennett@bridgeport.edu.

UNIVERSITY SINGERS – UB’s unauditioned mixed-voice chorus is open to allmembers of the UB community who enjoy the wonderful communal experience that choral singing brings with it. The Singers perform between two and four concerts each year, and sing an extremely wide variety of choral music. Rehearsals are held on Thursdays from 6-8 PM, in 110 Arnold Bernhard Center. Our fall semester concert will be on Friday, December 9th, in Littlefield Recital Hall. ANIME – This club features weekly anime viewings every Thursday at 10:00pm in the
faculty dining room of the Student Center. This semester will start off with the first season of Full Metal Alchemist and then have views of several other series that members choose.
