This fall, a brand-new student activity began on the UB campus – the University Singers. There has not been an extracurricular choral group on campus in many years, and key faculty and administrators felt it was important to provide an outlet for students who wish to perform.
There is a long tradition of choral and musical excellence at UB. Earl Sauerwein, a UB professor emeritus who passed away last winter, ran an active choral program on campus for many decades. He founded the widely acclaimed university concert and a cappella choirs, the pop singers (which successfully toured and recorded), the madrigal singers, and a barbershop quartet, among others. The last few years have begun a rebirth of the arts on this campus. Let’s bring the singing tradition back.
The Singers are a student activity and will elect officers later this month. The group is open to all students, not just music majors, and holds rehearsals in 110 Arnold Bernhard Center each Thursday evening (except Sept. 29th) from 6-8 PM. Grad students, faculty, staff, and alumni are also most welcome. Our new, but very enthusiastic group has had two rehearsals so far and we are already making some very beautiful sounds. Our first campus concert, on December 9th, will be a multicultural celebration of the holidays, including music from the United States, Brazil, Germany, Spain, Nigeria, England, the West Indies, and many other cultures. We invite you all to join us that evening.
So what are you waiting for? Come to rehearsal and see what it’s like. Choral singing is an incredibly powerful form of expression, and is a truly universal activity. Because music-making has such a wonderful ability to unite us, it’s very important to me that the Singers are as diverse as this campus, and that we sing an eclectic repertoire. Here is your chance to be a part of a brand new UB activity. I hope to see many of you at rehearsal soon. Please contact me at fmartign@bridgeport.edu if you’d like further information, even if you can’t participate this semester due to a Thursday night class.
