Any officially registered UB undergraduate student may submit a solution for this problem. Solutions should be submitted to Dr. Eigel through the Math and Science secretary. The deadline for submission is noon on Tuesday, April 19, 2005. A correct solution will be posted after the noon deadline. The winner of the $5 prize for the best presented, complete, accurate, correct solution, if any, will be posted two days later.
PROBLEM 205 (M) “NO SQUARE”
A graduate student in formless pedagogy at a large midwestern university was practicing button-pushing on his calculator, and discovered that , which differs from a perfect square by only 1. He immediately applied for a grant from the Federal Office of Grunts and Groans to support a research project to find all sets of four consecutive positive integers whose product is a perfect square. Prove that he never could find any such set.
