Bridgeport, Conn. – Bridgeport fell to Queens College by a 9-4 final in a NYCAC game on Friday afternoon at the Ball Park at Harbor Yard. UB got out on top by a 4-0 margin before Queens closed the game with nine unanswered runs for the comeback win.
Bridgeport got on the board first when senior designated hitter Steve Appel blasted a solo home run deep over the left field wall for his first homer of the season. That shot made the score 1-0 in favor of UB. In the top of the third, Queens was able to get the bases loaded on an error by UB shortstop Keith Persico, along with a hit batter and a walk by UB’s Wilfredo Medina. Medina got himself out of the jam though by fanning the final two batters of the inning.
The Purple Knights seemingly gave themselves some breathing room in the bottom of the inning as junior first baseman Chris Cadrin knocked a double to the wall in left center that scored Greg and Geoff Gilbert. That run was followed by a double by senior Erik Barber that scored Cadrin and the score was 4-0 after three innings.
The game remained that way until the top of the seventh when Queens came roaring to life and took a 5-4 lead.
Earning the win for Queens was starter Michael Morris, who went six innings and surrendered four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Three Queens relievers combined for scoreless relief over the final three innings to close out the game.
Bridgeport falls to 4-9 with the loss and is now 2-5 in NYCAC play. Queens improves to 3-9-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the NYCAC. Bridgeport is back in action tomorrow as the same two teams battle in a doubleheader in Flushing, N.Y. beginning at Noon. The first game of the twinbill completes the conference matchups between the two teams, while the second game will be considered non-conference.
