The Fashion Club would like to apologize for the incident that took place on Friday March 18, 2005.
The fashion club was hosting their first party, for “Mardi Gras”. The party was going to be the “jump off”, as students would say (both on campus and off campus partygoers showed up). The DJ (disk jockey) was banging and the music was bumping and popping. For instance, a song went “Bring Em Out, Bring Em out, it’s hard to yell when the barrel is in your mouth”. . . then the DJ would say “open your mouth, open your mouth,” and other sayings to different songs, hyping the crowd, as only a reggae DJ could. Just when the party was really about to reach it’s climax, the unimaginable happened. Three fights broke out and some kind pepper spray was released, causing mayhem and a near riot, with students panicking and running as if they feared for their lives.
I was in the coat checkroom and all I saw were students running frantically, exiting thought the lobby. Some students rushed the coat check door, got it opened and rushed in to get their jackets. Security came in a short time later and cleared everyone that was inside the coat checkroom out. When I went outside to get some fresh air I saw a lot of sick party guests, some were lying down outside the student center gasping for air, while some were coughing their lungs out. Some individuals had to be taken to the hospital in an ambulance, and a few others drove themselves.
It’s hard to comprehend the concept that individuals would come to a party and fight, when they could be dancing and having a good time. Even the DJ was appalled by the behavior, he stated, “I can’t believe that this happened. I haven’t even started to play the good stuff yet.”
