Athlete Spotlight: Raluca Alexandra Duma

Full Name: Raluca Alexandra DumaAge: 19Birthday: 1st of April 85Hometown: Cluj-Napoca, RomaniaHobbies: Swimming, Horseback Riding, Reading, among others.
Major: Biology, Pre-MedClass: FreshmanWhat is your source of motivation?I just love swimming, I need competition and I need to be challenged. The satisfaction after I finish a hard practice is great…and nothing tastes better than winning!Do you have a favorite quote you would like to share with us?I believe in the quote, “Everything that happens, happensfor a reason”. I also like Michael’s Jordan quote ” If you’re trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. But obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.”Who would you say is your role model and why? I don’ really have a role model. I do admire a few people. As one of the top swimmer on the swim team, how did you become involved in swimming for UB and why? I’ve been swimming since I was 7 and I knew I wanted to swim in college to and also study in the US. So I applied to some universities in the US with swimming programs, among them UB, who accepted me with a scholarship. Tell us a little about UB’ s Swim team, and any up coming events. It is an amazing team! There were only six of us (sadly next season three of the girls will not come back because their eligibility for competing is finished) and this made us like a family! The atmosphere was great! We had a lot of fun this season! Unfortunately, the season is over now, so there are no more meets. Next season starts in September. How can interested students get involved in being a part of the team? They only have to make some time to drop by at Wheeler Recreation Center, talk to coach Brad Flood and they will not be sorry if they join the team. What other activities, organizations, or clubs have you been involved with since you have been at UB?I did not have a lot of time for other activities at UB. Practices and classes take most of my time. How do you balance your time between, swimming, school, and otherextra-curricular activities?I don’t watch TV to much. It’s not really easy, but I manage to go to all practices, do the school work, hang-out with my friends, keep in contact with my family and my friends back home. I’m trying to be organized and I guess that helps. What advice do you have on managing one’s time between school and extra-curricular activities? I don’t like giving advice. What works for me, might not work for other people. Don’t watch TV too much!If you had to choose one event/person at UB, that has had a great impact on your life, what/who would it be and why?The person that had the greater on my life is by far, my coach, Brad Flood. He is a great person and the best coach I ever had. I am just thrilled that I had the chance to meet him and the opportunity to work with him and to be part of his team.
