Men’s Basketball Dominates St. Thomas Aquinas, 97-59

Bridgeport, Conn. — St. Thomas Aquinas came into the night with a six-game winning streak but left the Hubbell Gym with a 97-59 loss as the UB men’s basketball team dominated from beginning to end with a 38-point rout of the visiting Spartans for their third straight victory. UB jumped out on top 15-2 in the opening 4:10 and never looked back, leading by as many as 45 in the second half. The 38-point margin of victory was the largest for UB since the Purple Knights defeated Molloy, 115-73, back on January 5, 1993. Under head coach Mike Ruane, the team previously had a 37-point win back on January 29, 2003 over Dowling (89-52).
The stories of the night for Bridgeport were the 32-point performance from junior Kevin Jeffreys and the near quadruple-double from All-American candidate Ramel Allen. Jeffreys tied a season-high with 32 points on 12-of-15 shooting from the field, including 3-of-5 from three-point land. In addition, he tallied eight rebounds, four assists and three steals in 33 minutes of play. Allen was superb as he piled up 12 points, 16 rebounds, 11 blocked shots and eight assists in 35 minutes. Joining the duo in double figures was Mike Rosario and Jeremy Benjamin with 18 points each. Both of those players had a number of spectacular dunks that brought the crowd of 862 to their feet in the second half.
For the game, UB shot an impressive 58.8 percent from the field and 63.6 percent from three-point land. The Purple Knights at least temporarily cured their free throw shooting woes as they shot 78.3 percent, hitting 18-of-23 attempts. The Purple Knights outrebounded the Spartans by a 43-31 margin, including 34-17 on the defensive end.
NYCAC Player of the Week Robert Epps led STAC with 18 points in 35 minutes, but also turned the ball over seven times. Christopher Butler added 14 points in 26 minutes, hitting 6-of-10 shots from the field. No other Spartans had more than seven points. For the game, the team only shot 30.8 percent from the field.
UB is now 16-5 overall and 14-4 in the NYCAC and keeps pace with Queens in the race for second place in the league as Queens stunned 19th-ranked Adelphi tonight. STAC falls to 11-14 overall and 11-8 in the NYCAC as the Spartans had their six-game winning streak snapped.
