The University of Bridgeport didn’t allow a single shot on goal by Dominican College as the Purple Knights put together a dominant performance and claimed the ECAC Division II Women’s Soccer title by a 3-0 final on Sunday afternoon at Seaside Park.
UB’s Amanda Rademaker opened the scoring at 15:04 when she intercepted a Dominican clearing pass from a defender and put it over the goalkeeper’s hands from just outside the 18-yard box. After the game went to the half at 1-0, UB scored just 13 seconds into the second half to go up 2-0. That goal came off the foot of forward Lilja Valthorsdottir, who posted the game-winning goal to win this semifinal game for the Purple Knights. The scoring was closed out at 60:07 on a goal from sophomore Rut Bjarnadottir, to account for the 3-0 final. Valthorsdottir was named the Tournament MVP for her performance in UB’s two games.
The title is the first for UB after advancing to the ECAC Semifinals in each of the last two seasons. Under sixth-year Head Coach Magnus Nilerud, the Purple Knights have improved each season and with today’s win, the team sets a single-season school record for victories with 14.
In goal for UB was sophomore Allison Verobel, who earned her 11th shutout of the season. Verobel now holds the single-season and career marks for shutouts at the University of Bridgeport. Dominican goalkeeper Jill Slesinski made 12 saves as she kept DC in the game for much of the 90 minutes.
