Nationally attended “Make a Difference Day” was October 23rd, and Service for Peace Campus Core traveled to Kokenoe Island. After driving 15 minutes into Stamford they met Tom Little, one of the leaders of a yacht company and the partner for the project. The eleven UB volunteers had a chance to ride on two boats to get to the Island, where they cleaned up balloons, computers and other miscellaneous objects. Everyone split into two teams, combed half of the beach and then met on the opposite end. All in all, they had a great time and got a chance to learn more about each other on the nice boat rides. Coming up, there are two long-term projects that students can sign up for. The first project requires UB students to be mentors, tutors, and creative collaborators in the after-school program at the YMCA just down Park Ave. The commitment is once a week from 3:00-6:00pm. The second opportunity is to commit to going to Prospect House Homeless Shelter and Soup Kitchen once a week for the evening to help cook dinner for residents.
Thanks to all those who contributed to Service for Peace by buying something from the Tag Sale held last Thursday. Proceeds will go towards a fun trip on the Long Island Ferry to Port Jefferson. New projects will be posted around campus or announced at House meetings.
