I think it’s safe to say that this year’s election is going to be even harder to win than the one four years ago. I remember the media circus that was the recount and then the whining about the electoral system. This time around, Bush is up against John Kerry and the two of them are fighting over a few hundred thousand voters in a handful of states. Talk about a hard decision. This is the first time I will be voting in a major election and I think it’s exciting. I want to make the right decision and I’m convinced that President George W. Bush is the man for me. The main issue that came into play when making this decision was the WAR. The President’s first responsibility is the physical safety of the American people. There is a reason that the President is called the Commander-in-Chief. He is the leader of the armed forces. I do not agree with every aspect of the President’s domestic policy (in fact I agree with very little of it). However the president is not solely responsible for domestic policy, Congress, made up of representatives from every state, is responsible for the majority of it (as it should be). John Kerry says that the state of domestic affairs is a mess. Well I’d like to know what he thought he was supposed to be doing in congress. The President is our ambassador to the world; he is responsible for defending us against attackers in times of war. Senator John Kerry is responsible for the legislation that determines everything from federal healthcare to international trade policies. The President has the power of veto, but even this can be overruled by Congress. Doesn’t that mean that Senator Kerry has more control over domestic affairs than the President?
George W. Bush took office in January of 2001 and the World Trade Center was attacked less than a year later. What was he supposed to do? The American people certainly didn’t want him to sit and twiddle his thumbs. He took action; he went after the people responsible. This was not an easy task. It wasn’t like France had dropped a bomb on us. The attack was the product of a loosely connected terrorist network (in more than 30 countries) headed by Osama Bin Laden. When Osama Bin Laden took refuge in Afghanistan every diplomatic avenue was explored, but there comes a point when you have to hold a government responsible for harboring a dangerous criminal. And the President did.
Senator Kerry says that this war was the wrong place and the wrong time. Well I agree, but we are in that place and this is the time and we need someone who is committed to seeing it through. Kerry voted to send us to war, yet he seems unclear now as to where he stands. I just don’t think it is worth the risk giving a man who is not fully committed to seeing this war through control of our armed forces.
President Bush will continue to hold any government responsible for harboring criminals dangerous to the safety of the American people and our way of life. I have confidence in the President’s convictions, his unwavering commitment to our safety and I don’t think I could sleep at night with anyone else but him in office.
