In response to Scribe article “Alcoholic’s Corner” written by Jonathan Walsh.To the Editor:
We in Health Services where extremely concerned to read Walsh’s “Alcoholic’s Corner” and the alleged “tips” he provided. We recognize the majority of students choose not drink, and are searching for ways to relieve stress that does not involved substance abuse. Therefore, whether you’re new to UB or returning, Health Services would like to provide you with some suggestions for relieving stress without indulging in alcohol that will enable you to attend all your classes Monday through Friday.
STRESS RELIEF TECHNIQUES:
1. Take a break from studying
ú Take short breaks, they improve performance.
2. Eat a good meal
ú Eat a balanced diet including varieties of fruits, vegetables and grains.
3. Release some tension
ú Join a Yoga class. Learn deep breathing and other relaxation techniques. Take deep breaths.
4. Be creative
ú Paint, draw cartoons or do crafts.
5. Take a nap
6. Listen to music
ú Enjoy relaxing music or dance lessons.
7. Exercise
ú Physical activity releases muscle tension caused by stress. Go to the Recreation Center, swim, play basketball, tennis, racquet-ball or weight lifting, jog or play soccer.
ú Even a ten-minute walk provides great stress relief.
8. Play a video game, go to the mall, movies or bowling
9. Read
ú Relax; take your mind off of your exams. Read a book for pleasure. It’s worth it!
10. Join University Student Sponsored Club
ú There are many choices of clubs.
11. School Sponsored Trips
12. Limit caffeine intake:
ú Excess caffeine can add to anxiety-related feelings such as nervousness, irritability, sweating and tremors.
13. Ask for help when you need it.
ú Advisors, professors, and the academic resource center are there to help you.
14. Prepare for tests and papers ahead of time.
ú Then, you won’t have to cram.
15. Take care of your body and mind.
ú Make sure you get a good nights sleep
ú Arrange your schedule to get it.
Students clearly overestimate the consumption of Alcohol by their peers and believe that alcohol is the favorite stress relief for some college students. Not all students at the University of Bridgeport indulge in drinking to reduce stress. To clarify this misconception regarding alcohol consumption, Health Services encourages students to participate in the listed stress relief techniques to enable them to attend all their classes and thereby achieving their academic goals.
