The University of Bridgeport men’s basketball team will open the preseason with an exhibition game against the University of Connecticut in a battle of Connecticut state rivals. For the Huskies, the game will be their first since winning the NCAA Division I National Championship in a rout of Georgia Tech. The game will take place on November 4th at 7:30 p.m. at the Gampel Pavilion on the UConn campus in Storrs, Conn.”It’s a great honor for our University and our program to be playing a team like UConn,” said UB head coach Mike Ruane. “It’s a terrific experience for our student-athletes to play a team of that caliber and in front of over 10,000 of their fans.”
The 2004-2005 UB team includes a number of highly-touted recruits, including Bridgeport native Kevin Jeffreys, 6-11 center Ramel Allen and 6-7 forward Dave Wilkerson.
In addition to yet another season of on-court success for the UB men’s basketball program, the team graduated a class of five players who earned their degrees. In all, 15 players who were recruited by coach Ruane have earned their degrees from the University. In addition to academic success within the program, coach Ruane was honored with the Sam Schoenfeld Award following last season, given to an institution which, in the judgment of the CBOA membership, best exemplifies “the highest degree of sportsmanship, character, and ethics among their players, coaches and spectators.”
