Bridgeport, Conn. – UB forward Lilja Valthorsdottir (Gardabaer, Iceland) scored in the 88th minute to give the University of Bridgeport a thrilling, 1-0 win over East Stroudsburg in Northeast region women’s soccer action at Seaside Park on Tuesday afternoon.The two teams played nearly a full match of scoreless soccer before Valthorsdottir broke through with her second goal of the season. In the first half, UB’s Marie Widerman (Walton, England) managed the only shot and the game was tied at 0-0 at the break. In the second half, both teams had more quality scoring opportunities, with none being better than UB’s in the 88th minute. After sophomore Rut Bjarnadottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) played the ball ahead towards the ESU net, Valthorsdottir dribbled in and knocked a low shot pass the outstretched ESU keeper and into the right side of the net for the game-winning tally.
ESU keeper Jamie Dzik made zero saves in net, while UB keeper Allison Verobel made two stops in earning her third shutout victory of the season and third win in a row.
With the loss, East Stroudsburg now stands at 4-3-0 overall. Bridgeport, ranked fifth in the Northeast region, is now 4-1-0 and is back in action on Saturday, September 18th when the team battles Philadelphia at Noon. The game is the final regular-season meeting between the two schools before Philadelphia departs the NYCAC in favor of the CACC beginning in 2005-2006.
