The University of Bridgeport’s Department of Athletics has announced the appointment of Anthony Pl as baseball’s junior varsity head coach. Coach Pl has been an assistant coach under John Anquillare for the past two seasons. He coached defense and hitting techniques as well as base running. He also established the strength and conditioning off-season and pre-season programs.
“Anthony has been a pleasure to work with the past two seasons and has shown tremendous knowledge of the game,” said UB head coach John Anquillare. “Anthony will be a great asset to the JV program.”
Anthony is a committed youth baseball coach with the Connecticut Blue Jays of West Haven. He has coached many different levels ranging from ages 12 to 16. Anthony has been a positive influence to all of his former players, as they all continue to excel.
In addition to serving as an assistant for men’s baseball, Coach Pl has been the Assistant Sports Information Director for UB for the last two years. He assisted the director of sports information in managing the media relations program for the University’s 10 intercollegiate athletic programs and has helped the department receive additional media coverage in the greater Fairfield County area and beyond. His other duties include assisting with event management, redesigning and maintaining the athletics web site, and assisting with the end-of-year sports banquet. In addition, he served as the color commentator for all road men’s basketball games in the 2003-2004 season, which were broadcast on WPKN 89.5 FM and online.
As a student-athlete at UB, Coach Pl played four seasons of baseball and soccer as a Purple Knight. On the field he demonstrated strong leadership, a great work ethic and a strong desire to succeed. He played a terrific second base and finished his career with a .300 average. He also was a member of the 2001 baseball team that finished with the most wins in school history at 21. Also in 2001, the soccer team went on to finish ranked 23rd in the nation and advanced to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference finals.
With his enthusiastic approach and knowledge of the game, Coach Pl will be a great asset to the Purple Knight athletic department.
