Security in the Dorms
At the University of Bridgeport, students and staff alike have taken pride in the fact that they are well-protected. This coincides with the campus consecutively being ranked as the safest in the state of Connecticut. However, the upcoming replacement of dorm security with cameras has left some feeling that the safety ranks and feeling of security on the UB campus will disappear.
An overwhelming majority of students who reside on campus seem to feel as if these new measures simply won’t work. A junior who lives in Bodine Hall believes that “someone is gonna get shot or raped this year.” When asked why he feels this way, his said that “the freshman don’t know how to act and someone is probably going to bring in some suspect friends from home into the dorm. You know, people trying to sneak people in.” According to this student, the resolution “isn’t that great” and the reason UB is switching to this method is because it is a “cost cutting move.” Another student, a sophomore who lives in Seeley Hall believes that this new system doesn’t have a chance because students would simply cut the wire.
Some students are happy about these changes. A resident of Barnum Hall is joyful because the “IDs finally look legit!” Another Barnum Hall resident feels that this system would be successful if someone pays close attention
and constantly observes the images on the cameras.
With the new policies in the residence halls ready to be implemented, only time will tell if UB will continue to be the safest campus in Connecticut or if the changes, like some students have predicted, will, instead, create a
pathway for random acts of violence.
